With medical marijuana laws changing by the day, staying informed can be challenging. That’s why our experts at Piotrowski Law are here to keep you updated and dispel any confusion. One such law requiring explanation pertains to a motion impacting numerous Floridian farmers related to hemp products and the consumption of CBD oil.

Following a bill allowing the research of hemp in 2018, Florida governor DeSantis established a new agricultural scheme, entitled the Hemp Program, on June 25, 2019. This law officially legalized the growth and regulation of hemp plants. The government primarily created this system to stimulate Florida’s struggling agricultural industry, especially during extreme weather events such as hurricanes, flooding, or drought. Farmers will be able to start planting as early as this year.

With the plant’s various benefits and medicinal attributes, this bill may usher in a new age for medical research and development, as well as a stronger and more stable agricultural community. In other words, if you’ve been looking to get into the business of growing hemp, now might be the right moment.

What Does This Mean for Me?

new hemp laws 2019First and foremost, it should be made clear that this law is not allowing people to grow and cultivate marijuana legally. It’s hemp. While both plants are technically the same species (Cannabis sativa), their contents differ in some significant ways. Maybe most pertinently, the hemp plant itself is deficient in THC, the psychotropic substance in marijuana, which is still illegal to produce. However, this movement is still beneficial for consumers, as the government will regulate and protect the purity and quality of the hemp and any CBD oil derived from it.

In addition to its medicinal benefits, cannabis is versatile and applicable as a quality textile and building material. Skilled manufacturers can weave its fibers into sturdy rope or turn it into pulp to produce paper. Cosmetic companies utilize the oils for lotions and creams, and chefs employ CBD in cooking applications. Frequently, these products are more cost-effective and environmentally friendly than their traditional counterparts.
