Drug trafficking or distribution refers to the selling, transporting, and importing of prohibited drugs such as methamphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, and heroin. It also applies to the trafficking of prescription drugs like pain killers and such.

What are the Consequences of Miami Drug Trafficking?

A person caught distributing drugs or in possession of a large amount of drugs or cash at the time of arrest could be charged with drug trafficking. Punishment is based on several factors like the type of drugs peddled as well as the amount.

A conviction in a state like Florida would mean a lengthy prison sentence. It could also mean fines of up to $250,000. As such, hiring an experienced Miami drug trafficking lawyer would definitely be advantageous to you.

Minimum Mandatory Sentences

  • Cannabis Trafficking or “Grow Houses”
    • If you possess more than 25 lbs. or 300 plants, but fewer than 2,000 lbs. or 2,000 plants, you face a 3-year minimum mandatory prison sentence.
    • If you possess more than 2,000 lbs. or 2,000 plants, but fewer than 10,000 lbs., or 10,000 plants, you face a 7-year minimum mandatory prison sentence.
    • If you possess more than 10,000 lbs., or 10,000 plants, you face a 15-year minimum mandatory prison sentence.

  • Cocaine Trafficking
    • If you possess 28 grams or more but fewer than 200 grams, you face a 3-year minimum mandatory prison sentence.
    • If you possess 200 grams or more but fewer than 400 grams, you face a 7-year minimum mandatory prison sentence.
    • If you possess 400 grams or more, but fewer than 150 kilograms, you face a 15-year minimum mandatory prison sentence.
    • If you possess 150 kilograms or more, you face life in prison.

As any drug trafficking lawyer will tell you, getting caught with arms will automatically compound the minimum mandatory sentence. You will face an additional 10 years apart from the minimum mandatory sentence for the amount in your possession upon arrest.  Keep in mind, however, that drug trafficking is a first degree felony. This could mean a sentence of up to life in state prison so hiring a good drug trafficking lawyer is a must if you find yourself in this unfortunate situation.
